on to character-development. For me this has been an active and conscious task over at least 5 years – mainly through writing. Writing down what it is I think about myself or, better yet, how I would like to be described by those who know me is what has helped me in this process.

You can start small, a list of 5 adjectives that you would like to ascribe to your character and actively work on. One of my previous iterations (2020/21) looked like this – I wanted to be:

Reliable

Compassionate

High performing

Present

Energetic

I encourage you to get interested in your character, to build a list of adjectives that appeal to your view of self and how you wish to be received. Don’t be married to the outcome of the exercise, though (the actual “being described or received in line with your list”), the most important part of the exercise is the process of becoming and staying the person you say you are. So, commit to being / living out the adjectives more than anything else. Remember, I said people are fickle, so how they receive or describe you does not ultimately dictate your character.

III – COMMUNITY

So… I know the statement “people are fickle” comes off dismissive and cold – that’s somewhat intentional. I know that no one person is an island; we are all part of communities and systems that involve interacting with people, building connections and creating reputations for ourselves. People matter to us. What I do want to point out, though, is that not everybody matters to you to the same extent, therefore, not everybody’s perceptions and opinions should form part of your self-evaluation process. We all have certain friends, family members, colleagues and other persons we look at with more favour than others. This is often as result of shared values, common backgrounds, admiration of their mindset and value system or other criteria that make you value their words and views above anyone else’s.

At the core of this, I believe we all need to be more discerning when it comes to taking feedback from people – generally speaking, those people should be the ones who like/ love you, who are of good character and who you trust. Obviously, opinions will come from whence1 they come, and these days you really can’t do anything about who opines when. Your duty to self is to be selective about whose opinions count or inform your self-perception.

1 I know the phrase “from whence” is logically redundant, the sentence sounds weird any other way.

The beautiful thing about being observed by those who love/like us, is that they can help bring attention our blind spots, support us while we’re not 100% there and sometimes even help us see the beautiful things we don’t appreciate about ourselves.

IV – ACTIONS and THE MAINTENANCE PLAN

The desired outcome from the above steps is to ensure that:

So, every decision you make, action you take, and word you say should be closely aligned with your values and your character traits once you have decided what those are. And when things go wrong, as they often do, you are at least better positioned to assess your faults with a lot more knowledge about self, because you are able to look at the actions / words and interrogate how they align with what you ought to be per your own defined values and traits. You’ll also be able to look at other factors with more clarity (such as your tone and delivery in speaking to people, your transparency in the situation, the fairness of your actions/reactions and other behaviour, the environment itself etc)

Lastly, you will not get it right 100% of the time, there will be a number of setbacks or disappointments in how you approached an argument, or how you spoke about a friend in their absence, how you flirted someone who was not your partner or how you spent 2 hours in the company of someone you actually really dislike etc. Important things to remember when evaluating yourself or others:

You have to be decisive about which values continue to mean something to you over time; they are never cast in stone; in the same way you a person evolve over the years, the things that matter to you evolve too.

Do not abandon yourself in pursuit of making sure that people stay, or that they like you, or speak well about you.
